Career clarity for designers in 5 minutes

See how real designers actually get started and the challenges they face, distilled from 47 experienced designers and counting.

How did you get started in your role?

As a kid I was always into art. I dreamed of being a photographer and was always sketching. When I went to a vocational high school I picked graphic design, even though I didn't really know what it was. But after my first few classes, I totally fell in love with it.

After high school, I completed a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design. For my thesis, I explored Google Material Design principles and delved into the world of UI/UX design.

UI/UX design has always fascinated me because it blends creativity with problem -solving, focusing on how users interact with the product.

After working as a graphic designer for several years, I moved to Sweden, where I started my journey as a UI/UX designer.

What are the responsibilities of your role?

I work as a consultant, and my responsibilities vary depending on the project I'm working with.

In many of my projects I've been responsible for creating and managing the design system, ensuring consistency across all elements of the design, whether it's for the screen in a car, an app, or any other platform.

While I’ve participated in UX research on occasion but it's not a regular part of my role. I'm mainly involved in the last part of the projects which focuses on creating the wireframes, the UI for the prototypes, and later the finalization of the product.

Creating new icons for a library from scratch is one of my favorite things. I love the challenge of making them all cohesive while also unique for the specific product. It's something I've done many times and it's become a very relaxing process.

How do you incorporate the apps in your design process?

I use Figma for pretty much everything. Prototyping, wireframing, drafting ideas, and brainstorming. It's by far the best tool I've used.

As a designer how do you stay inspired?

As a designer, I stay inspired by checking out platforms like Pinterest, Dribbble, and Behance for new ideas and trends. Going to design conferences helps me stay in the loop and get fresh insights from other designers.

Working with my team is a huge part of staying inspired too, bouncing ideas off each other always brings out new perspectives.
